state's nearly 1.6 crore power consumers may have to face power cuts

Come Monday and the state's nearly 1.6 crore power consumers may have to face power cuts. The supply of coal to two major power generation
units at Koradi and Khaparkheda near Nagpur will be cut off between June 22 and June 25 owing to a `mega block' announced by South-East-Central Railway on its Bhilai-Bilaspur rail corridor. This will result in the state facing a shortage of over 600 MW of power.

"This will affect the power generation and may lead to power shortage in some parts of the state. However, the shortfall will be met by drawing additional power from resources available outside the state,'' stated a circular issued by Mahavitaran, the power generation arm of the state.

Two major coal companies-Mahanadi Coalfield Limited and South East Coalfield Ltd-supply coal to the power generation units at Koradi and Khaparkheda through goods trains operating on Bhilai-Bilaspur sector.

Managing director of MSEDCL Ajay Mehta said, "We will source additional power from units at Koyna. Besides, we will buy power from outside the state on a day-to-day basis."
