Mumbai students Udit Kaushik Chitaliya, with a 200/200 score, and Shagun Jyotin Shah, who scored 199 marks, emerged state toppers in the
engineering and medical segments of the MHT-CET 2009, respectively. MHT-CET is a combined entrance exam for entry in state colleges offering professional courses.
Results of the test, which was written by 2,45,617 students from across the state and the country, were declared on Sunday by the directors of medical education and research, and technical education.
However, there was disappointment for students from Pune as none of them could bag the top three spots in either the physics, chemistry and mathematics (PCM) segment or the physics, chemistry and biology (PCB) segment.
The best showing by students from the University of Pune (UoP) which covers Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik districts was by Madhuri Nagare of Fergusson College and Saniya Sheikh of the RBN Borwawake college at Shrirampur in Ahmednagar district. Both, Madhuri and Saniya scored an identical 197 marks in the PCM segment to share the 4th rank in the state.
Although, Madhuri and Saniya were listed at numbers 8th and 10th, respectively, in the state's top-100 list released by the director of technical education (DTE). This was because seven students had scored between 200 and 198 marks.
From Vidarbha, Sajal Chiddarwar scored an impressive 196/200 to notch up fourth place in SML and first in the region. He was followed by Almas Nazim of Nagpur, who scored 194/200 marks to grab 16th spot.
Tushar Unhale from Latur scored 195/200 to grab the first spot in SML among reserved category candidates.
After Udit, Abhishek Parashar Sen from Thane secured the second position in the PCM segment with 199 marks, while five students shared the third spot with 198 marks each. Eleven students from the UoP area, including seven from Pune city, figured in the top-100 list of the PCM segment.
Students with more than 190 marks in the PCM segment numbered 135, while 584 scored between 180 and 189 marks. A majority 8,643 students were in the 120 to 139 marks bracket.
In all, 2,16,75 students attempted the PCM segment as against 1,50,477 students who attempted the PCB segment.
In Vidarbha, boys from Amravati division dominated the list with Akshay Jain scoring 198/200 to bag the top position, followed by Ishan Pute and Shubham Thakre with 193 marks each. From Nagpur division, Shashank Khasre secured 190/200 marks to top the charts, followed by Gurpreet Saini with 188/200 marks.
In the PCB segment, Mitali S Golechha of JES college in Jalna was ranked second with 198 marks followed by Thane's Ashishkumar Jaiprakash Tiwari at the third rank with 197 marks.
The rest of Maharashtra region, which had the highest (89,927) number of students appearing in the PCB segment, ended up with a pass percentage of 18.54 as 16,675 students were declared eligible. It is essential for a student from the open category to score minimum 50 per cent marks in the PCB segment to qualify for the medical seat. The pass percentage for Vidarbha was 18.79 per cent while that for Marathwada was 15.25 per cent.
