The city is hosting the second regional centre of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), after Pune. The centre, which has
started operations, presents a plethora of opportunities not only for students but also for working professionals, housewives and others who could not pursue full time education.
TOI was the first to report on India's biggest open university setting up a regional centre in the city, in the May 24 edition last year.
"The objective was to serve the needs of students from eastern parts of state, especially Vidarbha, in a better way. Earlier, they had to go all the way to Pune for all their exam-related work," regional director P Sivaswaroop told TOI. He added that the centre will have jurisdiction over 14 districts: Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Wardha, Yavatmal, Gondia, Hingoli, Nanded, Parbhani, Washim and Nagpur.
"We aim to further develop IGNOU network in all these districts by opening sub-centres in each of them, thus bringing world-class education to the doorstep of people in this region." the newly-appointed director said.
As far as Nagpur is concerned, IGNOU also operates a study centre at Guru Nanak Bhavan on Amravati Road. The largest university in the democratic world has over 1,000 study centres across the length and breadth of the country. It also has centres in the Gulf, South-Asian and African countries.
Sivaswaroop pointed out that though the regional centre is presently operating from its study centre on Amravati Road, it will shift to bigger premises in a month. "The centre would offer entire range of programmes right from professional courses like medical and engineering to certificate courses." He said that Nagpur's growing status as a metropolitan city and growing demand from professionals for distance education courses are probably the reasons behind IGNOU setting up its regional centre in Maharashtra's second capital.
According to sources, the new building of the regional centre is likely to come up on the premises of the old building of Manganese Ore India Limited (MOIL) at Sadar.
Toll-free helpline for students
IGNOU has introduced a unique toll-free helpline for students where they can clear their doubts. "They have to simply call 1800112345 to raise their doubts and experts from our university will clarify them. We also broadcast Gyanwani channel on direct-to-home platform that telecast educational programmes free of cost," Sivaswaroop said.
IGNOU presently offers over 200 programmes including 21 masters, 12 bachelor courses, 21 post graduate courses, 24 diploma courses, 36 certificate courses and two awareness programmes among others. It also has 21 schools including humanities, education, sciences, media and journalism among other, which offer their own tailor-made programmes.
