KEM, GMC top toppers' choice

The process of first year medical admission though started on a bright note on Friday was marred by absenteeism at four Government Medical
Colleges (GMCs) in the state.

According to officials from Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), as many as 26 students failed to report at the respective form filling centres on first day. A total of 900 students were invited for filing up of preference forms at GMCs in -- Nagpur, Pune, Aurangabad and Mumbai from 9.30 am.

In Mumbai 12 students failed to report, five in Pune and Aurangabad each, and four in Nagpur. "However, these students still have a chance as they can fill up their preference forms till July 11 which is the last date," Dr Manoj Jeevtode, centre in-charge for first year medical admissions at GMC Nagpur, told TOI.

Nevertheless, the students and toppers in the Maharashtra Health and Technology Common Entrance Examination (MHT-CET) preferred top-rung colleges like Seth GS Medical College (popularly known as King Edwards Memorial College) and Topiwala Nair National Medical College in Mumbai, and GMC in Nagpur.

State topper in HSC examination conducted by the Maharashtra state board Almas Nazim has opted for GMC in city followed by Seth GS Medical College and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC).

Sajal Chiddarwar, who had secured first position in Vidarbha and fourth position in MHT-CET exam has opted for Seth GS Medical College in Mumbai followed by Topiwala Nair National Medical College and GMC, Nagpur.

The list of candidates selected in the first round will be out on July 17, and last date of joining the respective colleges is July 27. The cut-off date of the admission process for MBBS and BDS is September 30. "All these students have a chance to get an MBBS seat in any of the colleges," Dr Jeevtode said.

Nonetheless, a total of 7,265 seats are up for grabs in health sciences courses in state of which 2,060 are MBBS seats in 18 government-run medical colleges and 240 are BDS seats in four government-run dental colleges in Maharashtra. Additionally, there are also 118 pharmacy institutes with 6,935 seats in the state.

Dr Jeevtode informed that among the total MBBS seats, 500 are being offered in Vidarbha. The GMC and IGGMC are having 200 and 100 MBBS seats respectively while there are 100 MBBS seats each in GMCs of Akola and Amravati. Additionally, there are 40 dental seats in Government Dental College in Nagpur.
