As Nagpur University
celebrated its 86th Foundation Day, the ongoing teachers strike and a huge protest march on the university premises
on Tuesday marred the celebrations. Over one thousand teachers under the aegis of Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisation (MFUCTO) and Nagpur University Teachers’ Association (NUTA) organised a huge protest rally from Laxminarayan Institute of Technology to the university’s administrative premises where it converted into a meeting.
Many lecturers from neighbouring districts also participated in the rally led by MLC BT Deshmukh. The agitating teachers shouted slogans against the government for their 32 demands including implementation of sixth pay commission. A delegation then met with vice-chancellor SN Pathan and handed him a memorandum of demands. Nevertheless, the agitating teachers came under indirect criticism from none other than eminent litterateur and Padmashree recipient YM Pathan during his speech at university Foundation Day celebrations held at Guru Nanak Bhavan on Tuesday evening. One of the chief guests of the function, Pathan said when he started his career as a teacher, he was getting a mere Rs 300 per month as salary. “Even then we were a satisfied lot. But nowadays there is no satisfaction even if fifth or sixth pay commission is implemented.
We used to get just Rs 1 lakh as provident fund amount, but today the teachers receive that much amount as monthly salary and still they are not content,” he lamented. Taking a dig at teachers, Pathan said all the lecturers were good orators, but no one called them nowadays for giving speeches. “They need to introspect about how they can emerge from this situation,” he said. Pathan recalled his association with the Nagpur University during VC VB Kolte’s tenure. A former university student Prashant Gaikwad was felicitated for getting his name into Guinness Book of World Records by performing non-stop for 324 hours on tabla.
