4 yrs after convocation, students await certificates

Even as biotechnology post graduate students fear losing jobs or admissions due to Nagpur University's apathy in not conducting their viva-voce exam, here's another shocker! NU's examination department has failed to issue degrees certificates of many courses as old as four years back.

This has put in lurch thousands of students whose future is now at stake as their employers and college managements, especially abroad, are seeking their original degrees. Even in case of MSc biotechnology students, their degrees of 2008-09 batch has not arrived yet even as the convocation was held last month.

According to Baban Nakhale, the coordinator of Dhanwate National College, the NU has not issued degrees of the 2006-07 batch of Master of Mass Communication (MMC) even though four convocations have been held subsequently.

"Ever since the MMC course was introduced, not a single student has been awarded the degree certificate by the university. This is shocking, especially after the infamous fake mark-sheet and revaluation scam that rocked the university about a decade back," he said.

Controller of examination Debendranth Mishra admitted that about 60% work of printing degrees of the last batch has been completed and the remaining will be done soon. "Of the 2007 batch, only work of some courses pursued by few number of students is remaining. Otherwise we've issued degree certificates of a majority of courses," he said while refusing to comment further.

The senior officials from the department revealed that printers used for printing degree certificates were outdated and not in proper working conditions. They need repairs time and again and therefore only one printer was being used currently to print certificates which is consuming most of the time. Though the NU sanctioned huge funds for improving infrastructure of the exam department situated on the Amravati Road, it failed to grant funds for procuring a new printer.

The mushrooming of colleges and courses has led to worsening of the problems for department staff who are literally working overtime to conduct exams, publish results and also print the degrees. To add to their woes, the department is literally working in half capacity as authorities failed to fill up many important posts. Even the results of many examinations this year have already surpassed their deadline of 45 days.

These officials squarely blamed former VC SN Pathan and pro-VC GS Parasher for creating this chaotic situation.

Ironically, a couple of years back, in their attempts to corner glory by conferring honorary DLitt on melody queen Lata Mangeshkar, the VC had postponed a couple of convocations that resulted in multiple problems for the students studying in foreign universities or doing jobs abroad. The university's failure to organize 93rd and 94th convocation on time had resulted in creating a huge backlog.

It was only after reports published in the media and pressure exerted by parents of students who are abroad did the officials woke up from deep slumber and organize the 93rd convocation on April 30 and the 94th convocation on December 30 in 2008. The degrees of both these convocations are yet to be issued till date.
