AICTE approves 34 new engg colleges for state

After a long and agonising wait and flip-flop by the AICTE, the state directorate of technical education (DTE) has finally come out with much-awaited list of new engineering college across Maharashtra on Saturday. The list also contains colleges from other faculties like management, architecture, pharmacy and hotel management among others.

With addition of 34 new colleges, the total number of engineering institutes in the state has gone up to 305 and intake capacity has crossed one lakh mark. Earlier, the capacity was 87,606 in 271 colleges including the six autonomous ones. Maharashtra ranks third in the engineering colleges after Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

The list which the DTE refers as "draft institute information of engineering/technology" has 34 engineering colleges which were down by four after AICTE revised the list. Pune University leads the chart with 11 new colleges opening up followed by Nagpur with seven, Swami Ramanand Tirth and Solapur with four each, and Amravati with three. If this is not enough many colleges have also secured nod to operate in two shifts which will significantly enhance the capacity of engineering seats.

Nevertheless, technical education director Subhash Mahajan put to rest all speculations stating that the new list is final after AICTE had given green signal to all these colleges. "They have withdrawn 24 colleges which include engineering and management from the earlier list due to some discrepancies. Therefore, we've included these new colleges in our centralised admission process (CAP). These colleges would be available for the students while filling up online preference forms," he said.

He, however, didn't rule out the possibility that those 24 institutes will not get AICTE nod later. "Presently, we will conduct admissions with these 305 colleges. If AICTE clears them, later we will take decision in that regard," he said.

The technical education director stated that the process of filling of online preference forms will actually start from July 29 instead of 26 and notification in this regard will be displayed on the website soon.

At present, the NU has 50 engineering colleges with 16,039 seats which has crossed 20,000 with the new colleges and also increase intake of existing ones. Many existing colleges have got approval to add new branches like civil, mechanical and electronics.

Meanwhile, the MBA admission process will restart from July 27.
