The best-five policy adopted by the Maharashtra education department has brought a radical change in the overall structure of the merit list

The state education department has released much-awaited provisional merit list for bifocal course for Std XI admissions on Saturday at five colleges in the city including Dhanwate National College, where the students crowded the premises in large number.

A heavy rush of students was also seen at the other centres, peering over each other's shoulders, running their finger down the long list and trying to see if their names have appeared on the list.

In the top ten, two students are from CBSE and the remaining from state board. In all 5,139 students' names appeared in the bifocal list, 4,218 of which hail from state board, 864 from the CBSE and 42 from ICSE. Until last year, the CBSE students used to dominate this list in particular, but due to the introduction of 'best-five' the tables have turned.

Three students who dominate the list had scored 550 marks out of 550 in the state board SSC exams, while one scored 549 marks. Many of the students had received 25 marks extra as a part of the sports quota, five marks in NCC and drawing each.

A few students who submitted their sports certificate late have been awarded five marks.

The best-five policy adopted by the Maharashtra education department has brought a radical change in the overall structure of the merit list.

From Nagpur division, as many as 3,083 students got above 90% among 1.57 lakh students who passed the SSC exam. The department kept a threshold of 550 marks for the state board students and 500 marks for CBSE students.

This policy has been mainly adopted to equalise the differences between the students of state board, CBSE and ICSE. Earlier, the CBSE and ICSE students dominated the merit lists, but because of the best five policy, it did not happen this year.

Speaking to TOI, assistant director of education Rajendra Godhne said, "The objections and grievances of the students will be entertained in the next two days."

"Today, a total of 70 objections have been received. They are mainly about discrepancies in the marking system and totaling mistakes. We are looking into the matter and these grievances will be solved," Godhne said.
