Here's why there's no water for 2 days

Pranjali Najpande, resident of Pratap Nagar, was in Shegaon on Wednesday. But she cut short her visit and rushed back after coming to know that there would be no water supply in most parts of city on Thursday and Friday.

Fortunately for Najpande, the water supply was still on and she got sufficient water to store for the entire family. The NMC water works department had announced the shut down, especially for zones of Laxmi Nagar, Dharampeth, Hanuman Nagar, Dhantoli and Gandhibagh in west, central and parts of south Nagpur.

Several other consumers from other areas too received normal water supply till 9 am on Thursday. NMC water works department officials said that because of the two-day shut-down -- from 9.30 am on Thursday to 4 am Saturday -- for Pench-II, Pench-III and old Gorewada purification centres, they ensured that water supply was normal on Thursday morning so that people could store as much water as possible.

Meanwhile, the water works department has started its main valve (1000 mm x 40 inch) replacement work on the pipeline that connects Gorewada dam to Pench III and Pench II purification centre. The valve has developed leakages and hundreds of litres of water has been leaking from it each day for years. The department did not taken any measure to check the colossal waste all this time just because of fund crunch.

A senior NMC official said now that the NMC has sufficient funds, it has assigned the job to contractors Seth and
Sura Company Limited for replacing the valve. The contractors have deployed 16 men with three supervisors and since 9.30 am and they started blocking the water. After cutting the main pipeline from two sides, the old valve will be removed and replaced with a new valve using hydraulic crane and other machinery like welding machines, gas cutting machines and JCB in next 36 hours, the official said.
