Nagpur divisional commissioner takes varsity VC charge

In a stopgap arrangement after Nagpur University’s vice chancellor SN Pathan’s term expires on July 13, Maharashtra governor K Sankarnarayanan on Friday gave Nagpur divisional commissioner BV Gopala Reddy the charge of holding the post. Reddy will be officiating vice-chancellor until the new incumbent arrives.

But going by the slow progress of the selection process of new head, Reddy is expected to remain at the helm of affairs for at least four to five months. The divisional commissioner also confirmed the development, stating that he had received the letter from chancellor’s office on Friday and would be joining the office on morning of July 14.

However, he declined to comment further stating that he will first assume charge. According to a senior university official, this is not for first time that the divisional commissioner is taking charge of the university.

Guru Murthy had taken charge before MT Gabhe was appointed as vice-chancellor and then Girish Gokhle was at the helm of affairs before P L Bhandarkar took over the reins. In the recent past, Shailesh Kumar Sharma took over the charge when Arun Satputaley’s term expired in 2005.

After Sharma was shifted mid-way, the charge was later transferred to Anand Limaye who held it till Pathan took over the reins on July 14, 2005. However, former principal secretary JS Saharia has a distinction of holding the VC’s charge for the longest term of nearly one and half years. He was handed over the charge by the then governor PC Alexander after Kohchade scam was exposed which led to the resignation of then VC BB Chopne in July 1999.

Interestingly, pro-VC GS Parasher will also have to vacate the office along with VC. Henceforth, his office will be closed till the new incumbent takes charge and the staff is likely to be shifted to other departments.

Reddy will have all the officiating powers of a VC and he will sit in the VC’s chamber in university’s main administrative building near Maharajbagh. He, however, has a tough task ahead in absence of regular registrar and board of college and university development (BCUD) director which will compound further when terms of all governing bodies -- management and academic councils along with senate -- will end on August 31.
