Nagpur emerging as new Maoist hub

Nagpur appears to be emerging as a new hub for Maoists with security agencies suspecting that the central Indian city is being used for transit, treatment and regrouping. With its proximity to Naxalalite hotbeds like Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand, sources indicated that Nagpur was being used not just as a transit point but also for medical treatment.

Senior Maoist leader Azad, who was killed last month, was picked up from Nagpur railway station. Sources said there was information that many Naxalites visited Nagpur for treatment and security agencies were keeping tabs on patients seeking medical care in the city's hospitals.

Security agencies believe that many senior Naxal leaders often take shelter in Nagpur and its nearby areas for its proximity to all key Maoists hubs and leaders are always kept away from the difficult areas. They are trying to target the top leadership of Maoists as they feel that it would considerably weaken the whole Naxal movement.

Besides, they said, there was a vacuum between the top leadership — most of whom are in the age group of around 60 — and the cadre, who are mostly in their 20s and 30s. "There are very few between the two age groups," a source said.
There are also reports of differences among the cadre as most of the leaders were either from Andhra Pradesh or West Bengal while the bulk of the cadre consisted of tribals.
