news :- Is NU above state or union govt?

Is NU above state or union govt?

The Nagpur University has not conducted the viva-voce exam of fourth semester M.Sc biotech till now. The exam was scheduled to be held in May. This has affected the future prospects of more than 200 students.

Controller of examination Debendranath Mishra said the authorities can't help as teachers not available to conduct the examination. On the issue of guides from national level institutes whom the university does not recognize, Mishra clarified that only guides mentioned in the university's panel were recognised to guide maximum of ten students.

"As per rules, the guides should be from university panel. In exceptional cases like NEERI, students can bring guide from even non-recognised institute," he said adding that a solution would definitely be found out.

Reputed colleges from the city have also submitted a letter to the university informing that these students were already been absorbed by the frontline biotechnology companies, but they are on the verge of losing their jobs while some have already lost it. Since these students can't leave the city due to exams, they're in fact losing out fresh opportunities in premier research institutions whose entrance exams/interviews had already started.

Prakash Zanwar, honorary teacher at SFS College, questions NU's new stand. "Is NU above the state or union government? Union government, UGC and all state universities recognise scientists of national institutes as approved teachers or guides for dissertation. Does NU expect them to apply for recognition as guide," he asks. He says that by allowing the university students to work under scientists, the government has opened doors for good job opportunities for the students. Unfortunately, NU refuses to cash in on the opportunity.

"Any university would welcome scientists from such institutes as guides. Only NU can turn its back on them," said N Khubalkar, biotechnology teacher at LAD College.
