Plant trees, NMC to contractors

Nagpur Municipal Corporation is finally waking up to its environmental responsibilities by taking steps to increase green cover of the city that has lost the tag of being second greenest in the country. Municipal commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal has asked all department heads, executive engineers and zonal officers to direct contractors who have been given work orders in range of Rs 50,000 up to Rs 10 lakhs to plant a sapling with a tree guard at their respective sites.

A circular issued by civic head says henceforth all contractors will have to sign an agreement with NMC to plant neem or banyan saplings at their site. If work order is from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh, the contractor will have to plant one sapling. If it is between Rs 1 lakh and rs 3 lakh then two, Rs 3 to 5 lakh then three. Works worth Rs 5 to 10 lakh will involve five saplings and those above Rs 10 lakh should plant ten saplings. The contractors will have to ensure these saplings will grow and take care of it till the allotted work is given completion certificate. Civic head has also directed officials not to pay bills of contractors without ensuring that saplings with tree guards have been planted.

NMC has planned to plant 3000 neem, banyan and other trees on either side of major roads all over the city. The plantation will be carried out every year. NMC has already planted 500 neem and pipal trees at NMC lands like schools and near water tanks.
