Plenty of water till next monsoon

Even though the Totladoh reservoir, the main source of water supply in Nagpur, is only 15% full, the city will get its full quota of water and there will be no shortage in the coming months, officials said on Monday. They claimed that there will be no problem of raw water in the next summer, and the Water Resources Department (WRD) has not sounded any alarm bell as yet.

Nagpur city has a reservation of total 190 MMC (million metre cube) water from Totladoh dam. The city needs 1.42 MMC water per day. The storage capacity of Totladoh reservoir being 1,045 MMC, at present it has 158 MMC in storage. Besides the reservation for Nagpur city in Totladoh dam, the storage capacity of another dam Kamptee-Khairi is 181 MMC, and at present it is 88% full. Hence, there is sufficient water to meet the needs of the city.

However, the Water Resources Department officials have said that the storage in 17 major reservoirs in Nagpur division, including Irai dam of Chandrapur, is 29%. Against a capacity of 3,554 MMC, only 969 MMC water has accumulated in the reservoirs so far.
The situation is worrying, since last year storage on July 26 was 1,225 MMC, which is 36% of the total capacity. WRD officials admitted that with such low storage, very little water will be available for irrigation, however drinking water is always given top priority. The officials said the rainfall in the coming months would further increase the storage capacity in dams and there is no reason to worry immediately.

The storage figures at Totladoh are slightly better than 2008 when the corresponding figure was only 130 MMC. The low storage this year is due to poor rainfall in the catchment area of the dam, which lies in Chhindwara and Seoni districts of Madhya Pradesh. However, the current storage in Navegaon-Khairi dam (Nagpur), which also supplies drinking water to Nagpur city, is 88%.

As per WRD officials, the 40 medium irrigation projects of Nagpur division including Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts have water availability at 39% as on July 26. This is slightly better than last year's figure of 35%. In Bor (Wardha), the availability is 33%, Sirpur (Gondia) 60%, Dina (Gadchiroli) 38%, Itiyadoh 55%, while Lower Wardha is completely dry and there is no water available in the dam due to dry spell in its catchment areas.
