Reddy promises decision on Monday | Reddy this time told them wait till Monday

The issue of biotechnology students viva exam remains unresolved.

After getting no reprieve from the controller of examination of Nagpur University, the biotechnology students met the acting Nagpur University vice-chancellor VV Gopala Reddy on Friday. But, when he too failed to give any concrete solution to their problems, the students courted arrest in front of the VC office. Reddy has now promised to give his decision by Monday.

As the students began shouting slogans and staging protests, the university authorities called the police. The students budged only after the VC told them to give him some more time to understand the intricacies.

The students appear to be on warpath. They say that they will not give in easily and the idea of replacing the name of their guides with their teachers was merely to meet the university's criteria of 'approved teachers'. They continue to claim that changing names would amount to scientific theft and was illegal.

The students first tried to meet Reddy in his divisional commissioner's office but the VC called them in his office in the evening. When they finally met him and he did not give any definite decision, it only angered the students who claim to be running pillar to post along with their teachers since the last three months.

They were upset on meeting Debendranath Mishra, the university controller of examination (COE) in the VC office. According to the students, he did not allow them to present the issues properly.

"The VC was polite and was giving us a patient hearing. But the COE did not let us talk. He kept interrupting giving us the same suggestions of sticking to the rules which are being suddenly thrust on us. We could not communicate to the VC properly," said one of five students who met the VC as part of a delegation.

When the delegation appraised the other students, the majority refused to go back without any concrete decision. They tried to barge into the VC office again but again only five students were allowed.

Reddy this time told them wait till Monday.
