Teenage robber held with booty worth Rs 10 lakh

Crime branch sleuths have nabbed a teenager, involved in a train robbery, along with booty worth almost Rs 10 lakh. Andhrapal B Patil (19) had been a criminal since his early teens with several offences registered against him.

The cops nabbed Patil while acting on a tip-off that a youth was supposed to make an arms deal at Mini Mata Nagar on Friday night. The police were suspecting the youth to have links with criminals but little did they know that they would be able to recover substantial stolen booty. The cops recovered a bag with cash Rs 1.90 lakh and jewellery approximately worth Rs 8 lakh. Patil had left the bag at his relative's place from where the cops recovered it.

Patil usually used to target railway commuters. He had boarded Vidarbha Express for Mumbai on July 19. He spotted a family travelling in the same sleeper coach. Patil said that the family had a bag full of cash and other valuables. During interrogation, Patil confessed that he managed to steal the bag while his co-passengers slept and hid himself in the bathroom. He later sneaked out of the compartment and got down at Kalyan to return to Nagpur on that very day.

Senior inspector Madhao Giri, attached to crime branch, said that Patil's accomplices are in jail. "He had another aide who is yet to be brought to crime branch," Giri said. All attempts to trace the robbed family on the basis of the two visiting cards found in the bag have been in vain. "We tried calling up the Delhi number and the Kolkata numbers but failed to trace the bag owner," he added.

After being produced in the court, Patil was remanded to police custody till July 27. The cops hope to crack several theft cases after interrogating Patil. Meanwhile, city cops contacted railway police in Mumbai and Thane but did not come across any complaint with similar descriptions.
