West Nagpur tops in water dues collection | NAGPUR NEWS

NAGPUR: Corporators from opposition parties have time and again alleged that the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's (NMC) water works department has been supplying extra water to West Nagpur at the cost of North Nagpur and East Nagpur.

This is being deliberately done to give business to tanker owners and also to show that the 24x7 water supply project in Dharampeth Zone is a success, they further alleged.

However, when it comes to recovering water tax from the zones they represent, these very corporators conveniently avoid raising the issue in the House.

Statistics by NMC's water works committee head Prakash Totwani have revealed that zones from north, east and central Nagpur get adequate water supply, but the recovery of water tax from these areas is very low compared to West Zone.

The city gets 540 million litres (MLD) of water daily, but the recovery through bills is for 270 MLD litres only. Almost 50% of the water is unaccounted for. It is either stolen or lost due to leaking pipes.

Speaking to TOI, Totwani claimed that of the 1.69 lakh metered water connections in the city, almost 27,900 are illegal. "NMC officials have not made any recoveries from these areas since years. Most of the illegal connections are in Mangalwari, Ashi Nagar and Satranjipura zones which have the lowest recovery," said a source in the NMC.
