Contempt of court notice for Amravati CP

Amravati commissioner of police Amitesh Kumar and an inspector from the special branch were on Friday served a notice by the Bombay high court for contempt of court.

Justice KU Chandiwal issued the notice under Rule 1A which states that the respondents must be present in court on September 8.

On April 29, a writ petition was filed by Mustaq Qureshi and others seeking permission for cow slaughter for a certain period of time.

On May 3, the high court ordered the petitioner to make a representation to the Amravati Municipal Corporation (AMC) through the commissioner.

The AMC was given 10 days to take a decision during which the court ordered that no action should be taken against the petitioner.

According to the Sukrut Nirman Trust (SNT), an NGO, the Amravati police had seized a truck carrying 11 tonnes of illegal beef on May 12. Qureshi was the owner of the illegal beef.

SNT further added that the court did not permit Qureshi to go ahead with the slaughter. SNT member Gajanan Harpude was present on the spot where the truck was seized. The cops had assured Harpude that an FIR would be lodged. That did not happen and the accused were allowed to go scot-free.

The police later informed Harpude that Qureshi had shown a copy of the court order which said that he was allowed to slaughter the cattle. Harpude then filed a request for a copy of the court order. After getting it, he realised that the police had misinterpreted the court order.

SNT then moved the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court seeking action against the accused as well as the Gadge Nagar police.

The Nagpur bench had issued a notice to the respondents, including the state government, through the Amravati police station and commissioner of police.

The CP failed to respond within the stipulated time and was served with the contempt notice.
