Dividers, poles death traps

Eight motorists have lost their lives in recent weeks after colliding either with electric poles erected in the middle of the roads or against dividers without reflectors. Taking serious cognisance of these dangers, Nagpur traffic police have urged Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to shift the poles to the sides of road and also install reflectors or cats' eyes on road dividers across the city.

Sources said that deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Sahebrao Patil recently conducted a detailed survey of traffic signages on city roads. The survey included defunct automatic traffic signals, important signages like zebra crossing, stop lines etc, electric poles in the middle of the road, potholes and traffic awareness boards in all six traffic zones - East, South, West, North, MIDC and Indora. The DCP has submitted a report to civic chief Sanjeev Jaiswal during a meeting on Friday. The civic chief has assured to resolve these issues at the earliest.

The report, which highlighted the traffic problems of all six zones, said that automatic traffic signals are not functioning at over 10 important junctions. The DCP has also advised the NMC to replace old cables in nine traffic junctions in east Nagpur.

The inspection also revealed that during road widening works, many electric poles had come into the middle of the road. Though there are hundreds of such electric poles on the roads, the traffic cops have identified 27 roads where electric poles are causing frequent accidents. These spots include Manewada Nagar Chowk, Mahalgi Nagar Chowk, Bhande Plot, Sakkardara Chowk bus stop and Ayodhya Nagar.

Similarly, the traffic police have also raised the issue of potholes on city roads. A police cop deployed at Rana Pratap Nagar square pointed out that in the recent past road accidents have increased manifold due to potholes at this busy junction. The traffic department has asked NMC to repair potholes at 32 spots near busy squares as they are causing hurdles to smooth movement of vehicles.

Traffic police have also proposed to the NMC to construct road dividers on many important roads across the city. According to police, road dividers have been proposed in at two places in east, west and north Nagpur, four in South, and 10 in MIDC. The department has also expressed concern over poor maintenance of existing road dividers and urged NMC to affix reflectors, cats' eyes to alert drivers about their presence. Low visibility of road dividers is the reason for many road mishaps.

Two busy flyovers - Govari and Chhattrapati, and even the Khapri railway overbridge (RoB) are proving to be a danger for motorists, as there are no traffic delineators on these stretches. The cops have asked the civic body to install flexible traffic delineators on these flyovers and the RoB.

Besides, the cops have also pointed out the need for construction of dividers on approach roads. According to their proposal, there are around 10 spots which require immediate speed breakers. There was also a proposal to construct dividers at Pardi vasti, Chikli Chowk and on Kalamna road, which have gained dubious distinction for frequent road mishaps.
