NAGPUR :- Woman set ablaze, runs to police station

Personnel on night duty at Katol police station were aghast on August 11 morning when a woman, apparently suffering from severe burns, ran into their premises seeking help. Vanmala Meher, 24, darted across 200 metres from her inlaws' place at Shani Chowk, despite her burning clothes falling off, to reach the police station.

The cops on duty first rushed Vanmala to the rural hospital. She had suffered 70% burns. She was later shifted to GMCH where she succumbed to her injuries on Thursday evening.

Police have taken Vanmala's three brothers-in-law and wife of one in custody after the victim accused them of setting her ablaze after dousing her with kerosene. Husband Ghanshyam, a daily wager with water department, is under scanner but has not been booked.

Vanmala, mother of two daughters, had married Ghanshyam five years ago at Karanja. However, domestic feuds continued to plague the couple. Vanmala wanted to stay separately. Ghanshyam, being the eldest, wanted to continue in the joint family with his three brothers and their mother.
