NAGPUR :- Zila Parishad distributes nearly a million saplings

Nagpur Zilla Parishad launched its 'One Person, One Tree' programme  this monsoon. And, if one can trust volunteers and people to plant and care for the trees, it is very successfully too. As of now, a total of 9,91,034 saplings have been distributed all over the district to be planted.

Sources said that social forestry department has provided 17,00,584 saplings of mango, chicku, neem etc to the ZP. Of these, more than half have been distributed among volunteers and public for being planted and remaining would be given before the end of rainy season.

The ZP, under of Paryavaran Santulan Sammrudha Gram Yojna, launched this scheme after the district saw record temperatures this summer. Concerns were also expressed regarding effect of global warming on environment. Nagpur was once considered as one of the greenest cities in the country. But with rapid urbanisation and roads being widened, the numbers of trees' in the district had gone down.

Of the 13 tehsils in the district, Ramtek, which has a population of 1,29,110, leads with highest number of saplings distributed at 1,04,784. The second highest was Parsheoni where around 1,04,000 saplings have been given away. Around 61,195 saplings were given in Nagpur city. In Kamptee, 82,360 saplings have been given. Similarly, 1,01,110 were given in Hingna, 65,000 in Katol, 92,750 in Narkher, 48,685 in Saoner, 60,400 in Kalmeshwar, 74,600 in Mouda, 66,000 in Umrer, 67,650 in Bhivapur and 62,500 in Kuhi.

These saplings were distributed by ZP in 776 gram panchayats. It is hard to say whether they have actually been planted or not. Whether these will be cared for until they are able to survive is a big
