Number of CS students on the rise

The profession of company secretaryship (CS), is once again witnessing a rush of aspirants. A relatively younger financial profession as compared to chartered accountancy, the number of new entrants into this course which had come down in the mid 1990s to early 2000s, has seen a stupendous rise since 2009.

Hectic corporate activities like mergers and acquisitions, the proposed new companies act, as well as plans of setting up of the national company law tribunal (NCLT) have led to the change, say those in the profession. The current stress of the government on corporate governance has made the job more lucrative too, they add.

The number of students getting admissions into the course has gone up by 114% in 2009 as against the previous year. The year-on-year growth in 2010 has been 75%. At present around two lakh students are undergoing the course, president of Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) Vinayak Khanvalkar told TOI. He was in the city to chair a seminar hosted by the Nagpur branch of the institute.

The governing body for this profession ICSI, which ensures compliance of the company laws and other legislation in a corporate body, was established in 1980.

"There was a rush in fresh entrants in the 1980s as a large number of companies were supposed to have a company secretary mandatorily. Moreover, the decade also saw a large number of public issues so the students also had an attraction of starting a career in a listed company," said Khanvalkar.

"Even the ICSI is making brand building efforts to attract new students," Khanvalkar said.
