BSNL plans aggressive drive in W Maharashtra

The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has chalked out an ambitious plan to add to its subscriber base in western Maharashtra and the number of its base stations in the region.

Union minister of state for communications and information technology, Sachin Pilot, told mediapersons on Saturday that the BSNL has also made preparations for the e-district project for e-governance in three districts of Maharashtra including Pune, Latur and Nagpur. Work on the project will start later this month, he added.

Pilot said that the BSNL has targeted an addition of 4 lakh subscribers to its existing base of 10.2 lakh in western Maharashtra. These will largely be mobile and 3G subscribers, as the number of landline phone subscribers has stagnated, Pilot said.

He said that there are plans to add to the number of base stations for mobile and 3G services in the region and the number will increase to 3000 in the year 2010-11. "We will ensure connectivity to the remotest parts of the region by using a variety of options," Pilot said, adding that the BSNL is using the option of satellite phones in the hilly and remote areas of the state to offer connectivity. Three satellite phones are proposed to be set up during the year to take the number of satellite phones in the region to 121, he said.

Pilot said Project Arrow, which his department has started to modernise post offices to turn them into multi-service outlets, is getting encouraging results. The department has taken up 26 post offices under this project and six more will be added to offer computer-enabled services, including financial services.

Pilot said that the BSNL has operationalised 6,351 common service centres in the state as against the planned 10,484. The rest will be implemented on a fast track, he added.
