NAGPUR :- The marbat utsav started taking shape in 1885

The marbat utsav started taking shape in 1885. Coincidentally, this was the year when Indian National Congress (INC) came into existence. When Lokmanya Tilak promoted Ganeshotsav to unite people against British, the 'Chale Jao' call given by Mahatma Gandhi against Britishers was effectively spearheaded through the marbat procession by the Tarhane Teli Samaj.

Even today, host of programmes like bhajans and 'powadas' and 'Khadi Gammat (Tamasha)', highlighting patriotism, are organised. In 1885, two brothers Aappaji and Batanji Khopde were the first to take out the procession of Pivli marbat, around four-foot high then. It was to protest against atrocities on locals by the Britishers. From 1914, organisers started making a 20-foot marbat.

There's also mythological significance to the festival. The Pivli and Kali marbat depict demon Kans' maternal aunt Putna, who attempted to kill Lord Krishna on Pola day and hence the celebration. The Kali marbat also symbolises protests against Bakabai Bhonsle of Bhonsla dynasty, who was responsible for entry of the British in Nagpur.
