New Variety of Mustard Seeds is here

Farmers of the state will get such variety of mustard seeds which will mature within short period and will be with more oil content. The Regional Agriculture Research Centre, Morena of the Rajmata Vijayaraje Agriculture University has developed a new variety of mustard seed, 'Rajmata Mustard-1'. This has proved successful in the field tests during the last five years. Looking into the excellent results of the new variety the research centre authorities have proposed the state government to release the seeds for the farmers of the state. If permission was received, breeder seeds would be grown immediately and released to the farmers by next year.
Rajmata Mustard - 1 is new variety of Besica Junsia (family - Cruciferi). This variety will be ready for harvesting within a period of 98 to 120 days. These seeds have more than 40 per cent content of oil content. Trial of the seed was started from 2005-06 onwards and looking into the excellent results of the trials, the university authorities have proposed the state government to release the seeds to the farmers.
The new variety of mustard seeds looks like that of the variety of Bastar. In fact, for developing the new variety the germ plasma of Bastar variety was used. The Rajmata Mustard-1 was presented before the Varietal Identification Committee, Nagpur, in the year 2009. Colour of the mustard seed is dark brown. On an average five kg seeds are needed for sowing in an area of one hectare of land. Rajmata Mustard-1 is, to a great extent, disease resistant. It has the capacity to grow in less water or even in drought conditions. This can be sown along with Toria. This is also useful for double crop or multiple crops.

Mustard, bees, honey
There is special relationship between mustard, bees and honey. That is because the honey of Morena is special as it is produced from the flowers of mustard plants. In fact, Morena is now identified for its special quality of honey. This honey is popular in the country as well as abroad. By the end of October, the mustard plants start flowering. At that time people from several parts of the country, particularly from Bihar reaches Morena to buy honey. One can see a large number of bee hives near the mustard fields. When the temperature start dropping, the bees would become busy in collecting honey from the mustard flowers. For the convenient of the bees, boxes are erected on the sides of the mustard fields. The honey so collected is thicker than other varieties and its flavour and smell is also more pleasant. The Europeans prefer to use the thick honey to spread on the bread like jam. This is one of the reasons why popularity of Morena honey is spreading far and wide.
The period between September 15 and October 15 is considered very suitable for sowing Rajmata Mustard-1. The plants will grow to a height of 141 to 151 cm. Between 14 and 21 branches are seen on the plant along with four or five primary branches. The leaves are hard green and the flowers are yellow in colour. On an average a plant produces between 146 and 432 beans with each one having 14 to 16 seeds. The beans are 3.2 to 3.6 cm long. Weight of the beans is 2.8 to 3.9 grams. On an average one hectare produces 14.19 quintal mustard seeds. From these seeds around 610 kg oil is extracted. The residue after oil extraction is a top quality animal feed with high protein content. During the period of cultivation a little fertilizer and irrigating once would be sufficient. It would take 98 to 120 days to harvest the crops.
It may be mentioned here that Morena is famous for mustard production. The Regional Agriculture Research Institute is also trying continuously to improve quality of mustard. The Centre had earlier developed mustard varieties like J M-1, J M-2, J M-3,J M-4, and Toria varieties - JT-1. Agriculture scientists of the Centre are very ecstatic over their new variety of mustard seed. And they deserve congratulations for their achievement.
