100 dead munias seized from poacher

The anti-poaching squad of Nagpur Territorial Circle seized 100 dead munia birds on Tuesday morning from a fisherman in the city`s infamous Ganga-Jamuna area.

Munias are small gregarious birds which feed mainly on seeds, usually in relatively open habitats, preferring to feed on the ground or on reeds and grasses. These birds are listed under Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act (WPA) 1972 and hence the forest department action.

Acting on a tip-off, assistant conservator of forests (ACF) DB Jiddewar and forest guard AG Admane raided a spot near Masurkar Chowk in Ganga-Jamuna area and caught the accused Vishnu Gulabrao Chinnore (34). Last year, officials had nabbed Vishnu`s brother Dinkar Chinnore for the same offence.

Accused Chinnore could not be arrested in view of the tension in the area following the murder of notorious goon Bharat Mohadikar on Monday night. The accused was asked to report to the forest office at Civil Lines, however he did not report there.

"We will produce the culprit in court tomorrow. An offence has been registered against him under sections 9, 11 and 39 of the WPA. We are on the lookout of the kingpin, only then will this menace be solved," said Jiddewar. If convicted, there is a provision of Rs 25,000 fine and six months jail, he said.

A large number of munias are killed in winter, when these tiny birds venture into farms to eat seeds and grains. Fishermen and poachers trap these birds in the thousands to meet the heavy demand from meat-eaters in the city.

The birds are caught by laying nets and traps in farms and forest areas. Petty vendors from the city buy them in bulk for Rs 2 per piece and sell it for Rs 7-8 per piece after frying. This was the first raid of this season.
