nagpur :- Youth murdered by cousins

A 26-year-old youth was brutally murdered by his cousins on Friday night to avenge a recent quarrel. Jitendra Satpute`s semi-naked body was found, throat slit and genitalia mutilated, in an open field besides the Skin OPD at the TB ward of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in the early hours of Saturday.

Ganesh Satpute, 34, and Nitin Bairikar, 21, who are cousins of the deceased, have been arrested. Jitendra and both the accused were residents of TB ward servant quarters.

Police said the incident came to light when a GMCH attendant who had gone to open the OPD saw the body. The family members said that Jitendra, who was unemployed, would stay at home and get drunk every evening.

Cops said that the weapon used for slitting the throat was a butcher`s knife. "Jitendra was almost decapitated. The neck was hanging only by a piece of skin. Though the deceased had on his underwear, his genitalia were exposed," said deputy commissioner of police, Zone IV, Nishith Mishra while supervising investigations the spot. Acting swiftly, Imambada police cracked the case within five hours of learning about the incident.

Police said that a few days ago, during Durga festival, Ganesh`s wife gave birth to a baby boy. A function was organised at Ganesh`s residence, during which Jitendra picked up a fight with Ganesh and Nitin about liquor.

Cops said that during the tiff, a highly inebriated Jitendra, in full public view, ripped off a towel that Ganesh had worn around his waist. Ganesh was deeply embarrassed about the incident. "Since the quarrel, he kept threatening Jitendra of dire consequences. After the incident, the two quarreled many times," said senior police inspector Pravin Wadile from Imambada police station.

On Friday night, the youths met each other at a liquor shop at Jattarodi. "As usual, they exchanged heated words and returned home. At that time, Jitendra was accompanied with his friend, who is a witness in the case," said Wadile.

An hour later, Ganesh, armed with a knife, called Nitin. "The two reached Jitendra`s residence, where he was chatting with his friend, and challenged him to fight with them," said the senior inspector.

Police said Jitendra himself took off most of his clothes to fight. "During questioning, the accused said they wanted to pay back Jitendra in the same way he had humiliated Ganesh and hence they planned the gruesome murder," added Wadile.

During initial questioning, Jitendra`s family members did not tell cops about the motive of the murder. "Even the witness refused to cooperate at first. But when we reassured him about his safety, he revealed the facts," said a cop. Police said that though there were no street lights on the crime spot, the witness watched the murder under the light of full moon, hiding behind the bushes.

Jitendra`s father is a sweeper at GMCH while his mother had passed away a few years ago. Jitendra used to be married too, but his wife died within six months due to a prolonged illness.

Jitendra is survived by an elder brother Sandeep and two younger sisters. It is learnt that all the three siblings are to be married next month in a single function.
