No water for two days in north, east and south nagpur

For the third time in the last four months, taps in north, east and south Nagpur will go dry.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation`s (NMC) water works department said that there will be no water supply to five of the ten zones including Satranjipura, Nehru Nagar, Lakadganj, Asi Nagar and Hanuman Nagar on Friday and Saturday.

It plans to carry out five major repairing works including valve replacement, pipeline leakage and installation of flow meter on two main 600mm and 900mm water supply pipeline.

Around 120 mld of water is pumped from the Kanhan pumping station to the areas through these pipelines.

The residents of north and east are already facing a severe water shortage since many years and now this will only add to their woes. In July the NMC had a three-day shutdown and in August it was for 10 days for the same reason. Earlier too for a couple of times a month it used to stop the water supply for three to four days.

The NMC water supply committee chairman, Prakash Totwani informed that the WWD had decided to repair the major leakage on (900 mmX36 inch) main pipeline near Kamptee octroi post (opposite DPS school), replace the valve near Jaswant Talkies and Sugat Nagar and remove the valve at (200mm x 8 inch) pipeline at Shanti Nagar.

The main pipeline near Kamptee octroi post has developed major leakages and almost 1 to 1.5 mld of water has been leaking every day for the last several months.

The department had not taken any step to check the wastage. During a survey, Totwani and the water supply committee members detected five major leakages.

Repairing the leakage and replacing the valve will cost the NMC around Rs 2 lakh. "However, localities from central and west Nagpur will get supply as per schedule," Totwani said. He urged citizens from these areas to store additional water on Thursday.
