SC/ST panel notices to Pathan, Parasher

The SC/ST Commission of Maharashtra has issued notices to former Nagpur University vice-chancellor SN Pathan and pro-VC GS Parasher  on a plea by five aggrieved members belonging to the reserved category. The duo, blamed in academic circles for ruining the NU`s prestige during their five-year tenure, was reportedly asked to remain present before the commission during the hearing that begins from Thursday. Prior to the hearing, respondents were asked to submit their replies.

Legal member of the commission CL Thool, who will hear the pleas, confirmed that the hearing would start from Thursday at the divisional commissioner`s office at 12 noon. He however declined to confirm that former bosses were asked to remain present personally stating that since the notices were sent a week earlier, he didn`t exactly remember the contents.

"We will first hear the grievances of the complainants at length. Then the charges against NU bosses will be verified. A report based on the verifications will be sent to the governor," said Thool who is also ex-chairman of Human Rights Commission and retired sessions judge.

The complainants include one academician from the North Maharashtra University and four NU non-teaching staff members—Umesh Uikey, Pradip Masram, Rakesh Ramteke, assistant registrar Anil Hirekhan and former head of mass communication department Dharmesh Dhawankar.

Complaints were filed over different issues. Uikey was denied time-bound promotion while Masram was inordinately transferred to Gadchiroli sub-centre. Ramteke was deliberately kept out of selection for reader`s post despite being qualified while Hirekhan was systematically deprived of officiating charge of deputy registrar. Dhawankar, who was facing corruption charges and was subsequently suspended, accused the former NU bosses of keeping him out of office for almost four years.
