Named after the great Engineer, Statesman & Visionary of modern India, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur (VNIT) was established in 1960 as a joint venture of Government of India and Government of Maharashtra. The college has made steady progress during the past four decades of its existence. Established as a pace setting Institute of Technical Education imparting undergraduate education, it has played a leading role in guiding other engineering colleges in Maharashtra. In this mission today it has progressed to offering several M. Tech. Programmes and facilities for Ph.D. The college also undertakes R & D activities and offers testing, consultancy and other extension services including continuing education to the industry through the Industry Institute Interaction Cell and the placement of the students through the Department of Training & Placement.
Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, also referred to as NIT, Nagpur, (formerly known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE), Nagpur) is one of the first six Regional Engineering Colleges established under the scheme sponsored by Government of India and the Maharashtra State Government & is also one of the Institutes of National Importance for India. The College was established in June 1960 and named after the eminent engineer, planner and statesman of the country Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya.
Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology(VNIT)is one of the 20 National Institutes of Technology Engineering Colleges established by the Indian Government. It currently imparts engineering and scientific education in 8 undergraduate, 11 graduate programmes and numerous other research programmes. Undergraduate programs lead to B.Tech. degrees, while graduate students and postgraduate students earn M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees respectively. VNIT also has an architecture school awarding the B.Arch. and M.Arch. degrees. VNIT has also been given the added responsibility of mentoring NIT Mizoram for the academic year 2010-2011.
