Zeba (name changed), who was bathing in the afternoon in a ramshackle bathroom adjoining her hut, was startled when her father Shabbir Khan, a rickshaw puller, intruded. "He was under the influence of liquor," said a cop who added that Zeba`s mother, a domestic help, was away at work while her elder brother too had gone out.
Khan`s embarrassed daughter raised her voice on seeing him trying to enter the bathroom. Enraged by his daughter`s protest, Khan barged into the bathroom, grabbed Zeba and dragged her to the room even while trying to disrobe her.
Zeba tried to resist and shouted for help. Khan continued to pin down his daughter on the floor. The din, however, attracted the attention of the neighbours. Police said that Zeba was rescued in the nick of time by them.
The neighbours immediately picked up Khan, dragged him out and gave him a sound thrashing. Khan was released only after the cops from Wadi police station arrived.
Khan was taken to the police station for questioning. "We conducted a medical test of the girl to ensure that she had not been raped. Khan has been arrested for outraging the modesty of a woman," said a senior cop from Wadi police station.
The cops said that Khan showed little remorse even when they were quizzing him.
