Two dead, 16 injured as Starbus driver loses control

City police had a nightmarish time bringing the situation under control after a Starbus rammed into vehicles waiting at the traffic signal at Maharaj Bagh square, killing two pedestrians and injuring more than 16 persons on Wednesday afternoon.

It was a miraculous escape for many pedestrians and vendors on the footpath, where the killer bus finally came to a crashing halt after the driver lost control. The site of mishap immediately turned into a battle zone, as angry commuters went berserk.

The agitators pelted stones and damaged 10 Starbuses, including the killer bus, on the busy Amravati Road. Traffic was paralysed for more than an hour as cops tried to rush the victims to hospital, and disperse the mob.

The Starbus involved in the mishap was heading to Kalmeshwar. It rammed into a autorickshaw from behind, slamming it into two more autos waiting at the traffic signal near Maharaj Bagh gate. A number of two-wheelers, including a Scooty, Luna and two bikes, were also damaged in the ghastly pile up. A car was also among the damaged vehicles.

Several mangled vehicles had to be towed away from the spot after the accident as the busy junction descended into chaos. The shreds of glass from the shattered windscreens of vehicles, splattered blood stains on the road surface, bent traffic signs, wrecked handcarts belonging to roadside vendors and damaged portion of the footpath indicated the intensity of the mishap.

Kesriprasad Tiwari and Devidas Sahare, both Public Words Department ( PWD) employees working at Vasantrao Deshpande Hall, died in the accident. The duo had gone to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to collect documents of Tiwari's new bike purchased couple of months ago.

Later, the colleagues went to Sitabuldi to make Diwali purchases and were returning to Deshpande Hall when the accident took place. Sources said that the victims were waiting on the footpath to take an autorickshaw.

Eyewitnesses claimed that there was a big noise as the truck rammed into the vehicles, followed by a hue and cry as people rushed to help the injured. Cops from Sitabuldi police station reached the spot soon along with the Quick Response Team (QRT).

While some of the injured were taken to Mure Memorial hospital, 10 injured were rushed to Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH). The injured were also taken to Lata Mangeshkar Hospital at Sitabuldi. Some of the victims were said to be serious.

Bus driver Dinesh Thaokar and conductor Pankaj Sarode were beaten up by the mob that gathered at the spot. Later, they reached Sitabuldi police station.

Several senior cops also reached the spot. The driver has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Representatives from Starbus management too reached the spot and the police station.
