8.5 deg C, but it's not winter, says met

It was 8.5 deg Celsius in Nagpur on Wednesday night, and 5.2 deg C in Wardha. People can be seen tucked inside thick jackets and warm woollens even during the day. But it's not winter yet.

Though the city and nearby areas have seen temperatures dipping lower by the day, the Regional Meteorological Centre maintains that winter is yet to set in.

"Winter actually arrives during the months of January and February in Central India. The present situation has been caused by cold winds blowing in from the north of the country," said officials of the meteorological department. Even as the region shivers due to the cold wave brought in by northerly winds, the department predicts a further fall in temperatures all over Vidarbha, after the sudden drop in temperature in the past couple of days.

On Wednesday night, Wardha's temperature dropped to 5.2 degree Celsius, perhaps the lowest temperature the region has seen in a long time. Yavatmal came in second with 7.2 degrees, while Nagpur experienced its lowest temperature in the last five years at 8.5 degrees.

Earlier this month, the city had witnessed beautiful weather, with a pleasant chill in the air even during the day. But there had also been a brief period when the Sun glared down upon Nagpurians, wiping away all thoughts of warm clothes.

The layman's indicator for the arrival of winter has always been the roadside stalls selling winter wear, especially those set up by the Tibetans. This year these people, who literally bring along much warmth, were a bit late to arrive in the city. But, when they did, the timing couldn't have been better.

"The Tibetans seem to know the weather too well. They always come right before it is about to be very cold. When I saw the wares they were selling around the city I knew it's going to be a harsh winter," said housewife Anushree Mehta.

The meteorological department also maintains that temperatures below 10 degrees are observed with Father Winter still at the threshold. Whether one follows the prediction of the weather men or the beliefs of folks around us, this year could well be colder than the recent many years.
