IGNOU regional centre to help local students

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has opened a regional centre in the city in a bid to provide more facilities to students from the region. The students of health and agriculture courses, aimed at medical practitioners and farmers for updating their knowledge, would not be required to go to Pune now.

Previously, students from the entire state had to go to Pune for the duration of the contact programme. Now even students from western parts of the state would be coming to Nagpur. "Though people still doubt the credibility of distance education in practical courses like these, our tie-ups with hospitals or laboratories ensure that our students attend the practicals as and when needed," said P Sivaswaroop, regional director of IGNOU.

"Other than practicals, the students have to do a project that they choose on their own. Additionally, there are compulsory sessions they need to attend for a total of 21 days through the course duration," informed Dr Bhalachandra Sakharkar, programme co-ordinator of the health courses. IGNOU runs several unique courses like geriatric medicine, healthcare waste management, HIV and family education. A special course that is meant for medical representatives. There are some training programmes for the nurses and midwives as well.

There are several value-added courses for educated farmers like organic farming, water harvesting and management and even one in food safety and quality management. The last date for applying to any of the courses offered by the university is December 20. All courses commence in January. While the diploma courses last for a year, the certificate courses take six months.
