9 get lifer for killing youth

An innocent man who intervened in a scuffle between two parties to try and settle their differences had to pay with life around two years back. The Nagpur district and sessions court on Thursday sentenced nine persons responsible for his killing to life imprisonment.

District and sessions judge Rajesh Aasmar found nine accused guilty of lynching Balu alias Satyendra Mandpe on January 22, 2009. Those convicted are Vinod Thakre, Kunal Bagde, Rajput Pateti, Sachin Ingle, Amit Gujar, Anurag Akre, Ramesh Kale, Shekhar Meshram and Gajanan Shahu. Chandrashekhar Jaltare and Praful Mohgaonkar were counsels for the accused while Girish Dubey represented the prosecution assisted by Lubesh Meshram and Yogesh Mandpe.

As per the prosecution theory, main accused Thakre had a scuffle with a person named Umesh Hooda, and Balu reportedly intervened to calm tempers on both sides. However, this enraged Thakre, who attacked Balu when he was sitting with his friends on the steps of Shahu Kirana Stores at Chandan Nagar at around 9.45pm. Thakre and his eight accomplices launched a brutal attack on Balu with swords, guptis and other sharp weapons.

Balu's friends who were sitting with him, Arjun Pohankar, Dharmendra Yadav, Sudhanshu Varhade and Rajiv Joshi, were also attacked. The accused fled on their motorcycles after the attack. While Balu was seriously inured with multiple wounds, his friend Arjun sustained serious head injuries. Both of them were rushed to Government medical College (GMC), where Balu succumbed to injuries.

On a complaint by Arjun's brother Arun, the Imambada police arrested all nine accused within four days of the killing. Nine witnesses testified before the judge clearly proving the involvement of all nine accused in Balu's murder.

The prosecution lawyers were successful in proving the chain of events leading to the killing and there were no contradictions. The judge after hearing contentions from both sides, sentenced all the accused to life imprisonment. There was some tension inside the court premises after the verdict was delivered as relatives of the deceased and accused were present.
