Cold wave leaves city shivering at 6.7 deg C

The city shivered on Sunday night at 6.7 degrees Celsius even as the weatherman described the cold spell as an aberration, and predicted a swift rise in temperatures bidding goodbye to the winter soon.

All through last week, the temperature had been rising gradually, with each day and night being hotter than the previous. The hottest day was Friday, when the mercury rose to 31.7 degrees. However, the temperature dropped on Sunday night, making it the coolest night in the week at 6.7 degrees.

The chill experienced on Sunday night was a one-night wonder, officials of the regional met department said. The snowfall in the northern parts of the country caused the advent of another cold wave in the region, they said. This wave, however, is not expected to prevail for longer than a couple of days.

The conditions were similar in other parts of the region, with the temperature in Akola on Sunday night being 7.1 degrees. Yavatmal and Wardha too were cold at 7.8 degrees and 8 degrees respectively.

However, as soon as this cold wave subsides, the mercury is likely to rise again and days would too become hotter gradually as the winter waves, the weather department said.
