College conflicts keep cops on toes

Instances of conflict took place at two city colleges within the space of an hour on Tuesday. In the first case, tension gripped GS College on Amravati Road after its principal S Varma slapped an ex-student in full view of other students in the canteen. In the second, a student from Hislop College was seriously injured in a group clash over a trivial issue.

Kunal Kartar, who had taken admission in GS College in 2009, had not cleared his first year yet. On Tuesday morning, he went to the college to get an Allowed To Keep Term (ATKT) form. "Since the counter was to open an hour later, I was with my friends in the canteen. Just then, the principal, who was on routine inspection saw me and asked about purpose of my visit," said Kunal. "Since I could not produce the form, he asked me to show identity card. I told him being an ex-student, I did not have one and he gave me a tight slap in canteen itself," Kunal said.

This harsh behaviour of principal enraged Kunal's batchmates who then argued with the principal. Kunal then asked him why was he being slapped. "He then called the cops," the student added.

Cops from Sitabuldi police station immediately reached the college and pushed Kunal into a police van and took him. "They didn't ask anyone who had witnessed the incident. The cops only listened to the principal and the registrar and took Kunal in custody," said a friend.

According to the written complaint filed by the registrar, Kunal, an ex-student, was spotted loitering in college premises. Though he said he had come to buy ATKT form, he failed to produce it, the complaint said. It mentioned that since the boy misbehaved with the principal and was not ready to leave the premises, the cops were called in to get him out of the college. The students claimed that Kunal was treated badly by the cops as well as the principal and was not given chance to have his say.

The students complained that principal routinely struck them. They said even on Saturday, the principal had slapped a boy twice on his face after finding him taking out the vehicle in wrong direction. "Though the boy felt embarrassed, thinking about his future he did not dare file a police complaint," said another student. Varma, however, claimed he had not slapped the youth and had only scolded him. "Such incidents are regular in the college. Today's youths have forgotten discipline," he stated.

In another incident, a youth was injured in clashes between two groups in Hislop college. Police said the incident took place after a girl passed a comment on a boy. After the class, the boy stopped her and asked the reason. At this another of her friends intervened and was slapped by the boy who hails from Myanmar Rangoon. Later, the boy called some of his friends and beat up the other boy. Sitabuldi cops reached the spot when called. The injured student was rushed to the hospital. No formal complaint was lodged in both incidents.
