Pulse polio drive in city on Jan 23

After finding five polio cases in Maharashtra last year (2010) the state government this time is taking the pulse polio drive more seriously. The authorities would ensure that every child, that in migrant families, is immunised. District administration is geared up for the first phase of the drive scheduled for Janurary 23 and is taking measures to reach the vaccination to all 2,15,610 children below five years of age in the district. The second phase is scheduled for February 27.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Nagpur district collector Pravin Darade said it was unfortunate that still some people did not give the vaccine to their children due to superstitions. Out of the five polio cases detected in state, four were in Malegaon. They had missed the immunisation drive and one child belonged to a migrant worker in Beed. The administration this time would not hesitate in taking police help in families refusing vaccination, he said.

"Though no polio case has been detected in Nagpur district since 2001 we are taking all care that every child, including temporary residents, pavement dwellers and slum children get the vaccine," said Darade. Like always the polio drops will be administered to children at even bus stops and railway stations.

The drive is being jointly managed by district administration, public health departments of state government, Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Zilla Parishad, NGOs like Rotary Club, Lions Club, Indian Medical Association, NCC, scouts and home guards etc. In Nagpur district, the drive will be conducted in 1594 villages and ten municipal councils. A manpower of 6012 persons would be deployed including 5376 in rural and 636 in urban areas for the drive. Booths are also being set up at bus stands. Provision is being made for administering vaccine to children of all construction workers at various project sites, Darade informed.

In rural areas, information about the drive has already been communicated through loudspeakers by the gram panchayat and prabhat pheris by school children. Despite the pulse polio drive being undertaken for many years, 42 new polio cases were detected in the country in 2010. Intensive Pulse Polio Immunisation (IPPI) programme this time is taking all precautions to reach the vaccine to all.
