Students start getting IIM calls

Calls from Indian Institute of Management (IIM) to the successful Common Admission Test (CAT) candidates are rolling out. Management aspirants from the city await eagerly for their names to appear on the call list.

Six of the 10 IIMs declared their call lists on Thursday. These were Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Lucknow, Bangalore, Shillong and Ranchi. IIMs Kozhikode, Indore, Raipur and Rohtak are yet to reveal their lists. "The most sought after IIM is Ahmedabad and rightly so," said Nihit Mor who runs a coaching institute in the city. "The cut-off percentile of this institute is 99 overall and 94 percentile in each section. The fees for the institutes are higher than last year as the government has stopped subsidising it. The fee is around Rs 13.5 lakh which is quite high."

Nihit said most people were satisfied with their results. Although it was quite surprising that the freshers didn't receive many calls this year. "This year, institutes adopted a system of profile-based marking," said CAT trainer Mehul Zunzunwala. "The overall profile of a person is judged before he is called. Candidates who have work experience, good marks in SSC, HSSC and graduation are more likely to get the calls than the freshers. What's surprising is that the cut-off for IIM Ranchi is 99.66 percentile which is the highest this year. Till last year, Ahmedabad had the highest cut-off."

The aspirants were happy over the outcome as the scores touched a new high this year. Interestingly, Maharashtra has topped among those who scored 100 percentile, with three candidates achieving the feat out of 1.86 lakh who took the exam. The CAT is the gateway to not only IIMs but also other business schools which select candidates on the basis of scores in this entrance test.

This year, the percentile has gone up significantly resulting in higher scores for all candidates. Rohit Gadkhel scored 99.84 percentile with 296/450 marks while last year's all-India topper had recorded score of 289/450.

The official IIM website reported a heavy lag even on Thursday due to high traffic. According to sources, the IIM officials are planning to declare the result of CAT as quickly as possible after conducting the exam on the lines of GRE and GMAT. This came as a reaction as the website faced some glitch recently, due to which some students were able to see their results before they were actually declared. TOI had first reported about this glitch on January 3.

None of the top scorers is from the city and the highest score reported is 99.92 percentile by Varun Nasre from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT). Last year, Pushpak Pusegaonkar from the same institution was one of the top scorers. Last year, over 25 students from different institutes in the city including a handicapped student had got calls from the IIMs.
