LU decides to disaffiliate two colleges after girls allege ill-treatment

The Executive Council of the Lucknow University has finally decided to disaffiliate two colleges — Swatantra Girls Degree College and SG Degree College — following complaints of ill-treatment by the girl students of these two colleges.
Last month, B Ed students of these colleges had alleged ill-treatment by college authorities during an educational tour to Agra and an FIR was lodged against the college manager Dinesh Tiwari and his son Vinee Tiwari subsequently. Both the colleges are managed by the same group.
On January 31, a group of girls pursuing B Ed course from these two colleges, who were on an educational tour to Agra, complained of ill-treatment by the manager and his son on the trip. Reaching Lucknow, the girls, some of whom were in bad health, lodged FIR against both Dinesh Tiwari and his son. Vinit was arrested on February 1 but later was released on bail.
Meanwhile, the Department of Higher Education ordered a probe in the matter, and the reports found the management guilty. The varsity administration also made a committee which reached at similar conclusions. The government then directed the university, as per the section 66 (A) of UP State Universities Act, 1973 which is binding on the university, to disaffiliate the two colleges and take action against those responsible for giving affiliation to these colleges without proper inspection.
“As per the direction of the government, the EC decided to disaffiliate the two colleges from the session 2011-12 onwards. The vice-chancellor, meanwhile, has been asked to call an explanation of the committee that went for inspection of these colleges before providing them affiliation for running B Ed Courses,” said GP Tripathi, Registrar, LU.
“We have also written to the National Council for Teacher’s Education, seeking permission to shift the girls enrolled in these two colleges for B Ed course, to some other college for the present session,” said Tripathi. At present, around 200 girls are pursuing B Ed from these two colleges.
“Before the session began last year, a team of three members including professors Subodh Kumar and Saroj Anand from Lucknow University and SA Ali, regional higher education officer, inspected the college,” said LU spokesperson SK Dwivedi.
He further said the V-C will serve notices seeking explanation from the university employees whereas government will call for an explanation from the regional higher education officer. Meanwhile, SG college is reportedly run in a guest house in Vridavan Colony, whereas Swatantra Girls college is also reported to have poor infrastructure.
