Participate in extracurricular activities, students told

"Think positive as it will help you to become successful in life in spite of the odds," said senior journalist Shripad Aparajit. He was speaking at the inauguration of Nagpur University's Yuvarang festival at Buty Hall on Monday. He was accompanied by controller of examination (CoE) SP Kane, mathematics department head KC Deshmukh and Ishwar Deshmukh College principal Anil Kumar Karvande.

A large number of participants were present during the inaugural session. Chief guest of the function, NU VC Vilas Sapkal, cited renowned social worker Baba Amte's example to the youths to stress his point. Kane, in his address, inspired the students to participate in the extracurricular activities. "The festivals like Yuvarang provide you the golden chance to showcase your talents. Participating in such events will enhance your personality as you come in contact with your contemporaries," he said.

Karvande exhorted the students to regularly participate in such activities as it will help them concentrate on their studies. "You either win or lose in a competition, but it doesn't matter, participation is more important. It helps you develop sportsman spirit," he said.

The function was inaugurated by director of students' welfare, NU, Dr Ashwin Chandel, who in his introductory speech, said that Yuvarang tests students in music, dance, theatre, fine arts, and literary events like quiz, debates, and poetry.

The Student's Council felicitated former director of students welfare, Arun Patil, who was at helm of affairs for nearly two decades and NU sports director Dhananjay Welukar for his contribution to sports. Both of them also addressed the students. About 200 students from over 60 colleges participated in the event on the first day. It evoked better response this time compared to last year, council president Pradeep Patle said.

He called on the contestants to compete in the literary events on the second day of the festival on Tuesday.

Students from far-off places like Wardha, Gondia, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, and Bhandara also participated in various events throughout the day. The first day was marked by programmes such as classical vocal solo, classical instrumental (percussion and solo non-percussion), light vocal, group song and folk orchestra.

At the start of the event, many youngsters thronged the venue to cheer the participants. But by afternoon, they all deserted the hall on account of practical exams in their colleges. Students from rural areas also participated but overall their response was poor. Chandel, however, stated that from next year, it will be held in September-October to avoid these problems.
