Academicians for action against 'tainted' teachers

Senior academicians on Thursday called for immediate action against teachers who had submitted forged documents and false information during nomination for board of studies (BoS) polls. The dirty politics and blackmailing by a powerful group had earlier led to resignation of assistant returning officer Vilas Ramteke. Among those whose candidature were rejected by Ramteke include JK Thakur, DR Chaple, S Narayan Murthy, AA Dhamani, AS Khandelwal, SB Kishor, Vinay Chavan and Girish Katkar.

TOI on Thursday reported how the teachers from renowned colleges allegedly committed illegalities while filing nominations. Ramteke's rejection of their forms, however, led to pressure on him and on VC Vilas Sapkal. Even the colleges took part in their alleged illegalities by allowing teachers to submit false information and twisting the rules.

"Such teachers are a blot on the profession. More shocking is the fact that they're being supported by academicians who themselves head university or college. Can't imagine teachers threatening the returning officer and hurling abuses at him, forcing him to quit election duty," lamented NU Teachers Association (NUTA) chairman Eknath Kathale.

He added that the political leaders were trying to take advantage of new VC and new administration that lacked experience. "Both registrar and CoE are relatively new with no administrative experience. Therefore, pressure tactics are being played to get such candidates to contest elections violating all norms," he said.

Senior academician Balraj Aher blasted NU authorities for their inaction. "NU bosses must take action against teachers who forged documents or gave false information. Just imagine what the students learn form them? What respect they will have for the teaching profession? Such people should be thrown out of the profession for bringing ignominy," he said.

The former registrar added that even he had faced similar pressure tactics but he used to deal with it firmly. "After initial action no one dared to approach me again. VC should initiate action against those who're pressuring him and other officials. Whosoever the person may be, s/he should be taught a lesson for interfering with the administrative work," he stressed.
