Final Four: UConn Is America's Premier Basketball University

When someone thinks of the top destinations to play college basketball, the towns Lawrence, Lexington, Chapel Hill, and Durham usually come to mind.

After all, They are home to universities that feature some of the most prestigious and decorated basketball programs.

But I am here to tell you that Storrs, CT, with a population of just 11,000 people when not counting the University of Connecticut students, is actually the best place for a high school basketball recruit to go if they want to win a national championship.

Don't believe me?

What if I told you that since 1995, Storrs has been forced to host championship parades for either the UConn Huskies' men or women basketball teams an astonishing nine times, with seven of them in honor of Geno Auriema's Lady Huskies.

I take that back. There have only been eight parades because although both the men and women each won a national championship in 2004, UConn decided to have one massive parade.

That ninth parade might be coming soon as UConn's men team will be playing in the national championship game on Monday.

On the women's side, the Lady Huskies have a chance to win their third straight championship but will have to get past a tough Stanford team before facing either Texas A&M or Notre Dame in the final.

Behind two hall of fame coaches, UConn has clearly established themselves as the top basketball school in the country.

Jim Calhoun may not be the most popular man on the planet, but he has a knack for winning big games and it would surprise no one if he won his third championship on Monday against Butler.

Meanwhile, Auriema has made UConn's women basketball team so good that for a few years, they were literally unbeatable.

The remarkable 90-game winning streak was snapped against Stanford earlier this season, but the Lady Huskies will have a golden opportunity to get revenge for that loss when they face the Cardinal in the national semifinal on Sunday.

My guess is that Maya Moore will do whatever it takes to bring home another trophy, while getting yet another invitation to meet President Obama in the White House.

But even if both the men and women come home empty handed this season, UConn has already created an unmatched winning atmosphere in Storrs.

While some may always consider Duke the best place to play men's basketball and Tennessee the top school for women's basketball, UConn is the school that is full of crystal balls almost everywhere you look, thanks to the success of both the men and women.
