Ramteke for FIR against 'tainted' lecturers

A day after assistant returning officer for Nagpur University's board of studies (BoS) elections Vilas Ramteke was relieved of duties, he wrote a strongly worded letter to registrar Mahesh Yenkie asking him to constitute a probe panel against those who had submitted forged documents.

He also called for lodging a police complaint against such persons. He had earlier quit as assistant returning officer citing dirty politics and "blackmail" by a strong group saying that he could not be a part of "illegalities". In his fresh letter, Ramteke made some startling revelations while justifying his position. According to him, the nomination papers that were not fulfilling the statutory requirements were rejected. Moreover, documents submitted along with some of them were fake, tampered and generated by misrepresenting facts.

The factual situation was also brought to the notice of vice-chancellor Vilas Sapkal during hearing of appeals but he failed to act. Ramteke termed his being relieved as "unfortunate" as registrar had failed to provide concrete reason for it. He also rued the fact that NU had failed to take action against lecturers who submitted fake documents and tried to mislead the administration.

"It means that NU doesn't want to initiate action on forgery cases. On the contrary, it is transferring an officer who had honestly pointed out these irregularities," he stated. He added that this action was demoralizing for other officers as the NU bosses seemed to be supporting illegalities.

Ramteke, who is also NU's deputy registrar (academic), further mentioned that it was legitimately expected that on his representation of April 1 exposing the forgery, NU should have lodged an FIR against "tainted" lecturers and protection should have been given to officers. "Unless such precautions are taken, illegalities would continue to take place by putting the administration under pressure. And if exposed, only officers are punished," he said.

"All the decisions on rejections were of registrar, then why only he is penalized and his grievances are not listened to," Ramteke asked.

Yenkie agreed with Ramteke's grievance that circumstances in which he resigned would certainly have upset other officers. "It's unfortunate that he had received threats but we relieved him as per his own request," he told TOI. The registrar added that even NU Officers Forum had met with VC to express concern over the way Ramteke was forced to resign and demanded a probe.

Probe into Ramteke's allegations,NU registrar Mahesh Yenkie said that NU was likely launch a probe into serious allegations made by Vilas Ramteke. "After consultation with VC, we will take a decision in this regard. It is highly unfortunate that such things are happening in academic circles," he said.

He added that NU had also apprised chancellor-cum-governor K Sankaranarayanan of the prevailing situation and alleged threats to Ramteke. NU's action of relieving him came after it received a letter from the governor on a complaint made by Dr Ved Prakash Mishra heading the Secular Panel which won the recent senate polls. The chancellor's office had sought "factual report" from VC before April 17 on the complaint.
