Amul hikes milk rates again

Amul, a leading milk brand in the country, got dearer by Rs 1 to 2 a litre, in the region from April 30. This is a part of an all-India increase in its rates.

With this, Amul Taaza brand will now be priced at Rs 28 a litre as against Rs 27, the rates for Amul Slim and Trim has been hiked by a rupee to Rs 24 and the premium brand Amul Gold now costs a couple of rupees more at Rs 36 a litre, said RS Sodhi, managing director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) - the agency which markets Amul brand.

Amul has hiked its price for second time this year. Earlier in February too it had increased its milk price by a rupee.

Other players including the state government which markets the Aarey brand have kept the rates unchanged so far. The other major brands in the city include, Dinshaw's and Haldiram.

Sodhi said the rates had to be increased as the procurement price offered to milk producers have also gone up. Currently Amul buys buffalo milk at Rs 30 kl on an average and cow milk at R 20, which is a 20% hike as against the last year. There have been around four rounds of rate hikes since 2010, on account of the procurement price being increased by the GCMF, added Sodhi.

Besides Gujarat, Amul which has its presence in Delhi, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and some other northern states. It sells almost 72 lakh litres of milk daily. In Nagpur the brand sells around 50,000 litres a day which goes up to Rs 1.50 lakh litres when the entire region including Raipur is considered. The GCMMF has a plant at Hingna and mainly procures from cooperatives in Bhandara district.
