Medical interns begin strike for hike in stipend

About 50 interns from Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC) began their indefinite strike on Monday to press for their demand of raising their stipend from Rs 2,550 to about Rs 10,000. The protest was part of a statewide agitation.

Discussions over the issue have been going on since March but they have proved inconclusive. On the first day of the agitation, the interns claimed there was no one to listen to their plight. "No official was present to listen to our demands, even though they themselves had called for meeting."

According to Medical Council of India, a minimum of 40% pay of a junior resident doctor should be given to interns. However, this guideline is not being followed, the interns claimed.

The Association of State Medical Interns (ASMI), with complete support from the Maharashtra State Medical Teachers Association (MSMTA), laid down its demands of a higher stipend of at least Rs 13,000 with a promise of a pay hike of Rs 1,000 per year. These issues have come up after comparison of stipends given to medical interns of other states in which a glaring difference was seen in the amounts given in Maharashtra and others states.

ASMI members have vowed to continue their strike until their demands are met.
