Docs, engineers appear for clerical exams of district admin
Doctors and engineers appearing for an entrance exam for clerical posts reflects the job scenario today. These candidates were among the thousands who turned up to try their luck at getting jobs as 'talathi' in the district administration office.

M Khan, coordinator of the talathi exam held at various centres across the city said, "Highly qualified candidates are turning up for the exam. We have about seven or eight doctors and many more engineers registered for the test. This is the first time ever that Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) and the District Administrative Services exam was conducted on the same date for Nagpur, Gondia and Bhandara districts. A total of 19,007 students were registered to appear for the exam on Sunday."

Though around 20,000 applications were received, only 19,007 were found eligible to appear for the exam. Though official figures are yet to be released, sources overseeing the examinations said that only 73% of the registered candidates finally appeared the exam.

Khan said, "The MPSC exam for the technical branches of agriculture kicked off at 10am with 14 colleges serving as centres. The UPSC exam was for various posts in Indian Railways. The exams went off smoothly, we had made adequate security arrangement for them."

Sagar Gorar arrived in Nagpur early in the morning from Chandrapur to appear for the talathi exam. Gorar said, "I am a science graduate, but am unable to find a steady job. Currently, I am working at a private company but the pay is very low. I want a government job because of the stability it offers, though the salary would be similar to my current job. I was hoping to achieve more but jobs are not easy to come by in places like Chandrapur. If I have a government job then I won't mind moving to Nagpur or nearby districts at all."

Most of the students agreed that the stability of a government job was the biggest incentive and hence other issues like salary did not matter much.

Khan said the results for the exams will be declared in the coming week.
