NU prof is VC of North Mah Univ, Jalgaon

While RTM Nagpur University may be in news mostly for the wrong reasons, people associated with it keep scaling higher peaks. On Monday, NU professor Sudhir Meshram was appointed vice-chancellor of North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon (NMU).

Meshram is the head of the microbiology department at NU and joins an ever-growing list of Nagpurians heading the administration at various universities. Governor K Sankaranarayanan, who is also the chancellor of all state universities, selected Meshram from a panel of names. The appointment will be for a period of five years and shall come into effect from the date Meshram assumes charge.

Meshram, who arrived in city from Mumbai late evening, said he was elated. "I will work hard to bring NMU to an international level and ensure smooth administration of the varsity. There are a lot of tribal areas in the region and I want to make sure that education reaches to more and more people there. Right now I want to spend a couple of days in the city before leaving for my new job," said Meshram.

Meshram succeeds KB Patil whose term ended on August 21. The governor had appointed a Search Committee under Justice Mukul Mudgal, retired chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, to recommend a panel of names for the post.

Meshram is the seventh Nagpurian to be serving as VC of a university in the State. The other universities are Nagpur, Amravati, YCMOU, Marathwada, Mumbai and Lonere (Raigad).

Though he was born in neighbouring Amravati district in 1955, Meshram spent a large part of his professional life in Nagpur. He completed his bachelor's degree from Punjabrao Deshmukh Agriculture University and has fond memories of the city during his student life. He has 26 years of teaching experience at postgraduate level including administrative experience of 17 years.

Meshram obtained his PhD in microbiology from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, and completed postdoctoral qualification in Microbiology from the International Agricultural Centre, Holland.

Having published 120 research papers in National and International Journals, Meshram was heading the microbiology department at NU while holding additional charge of director at Rajiv Gandhi Biotechnological Centre for last 16 years.
