Nurses and midwives play an important role in the field of healthcare for patients. The job of a nurse requires great responsibility and care. Out of the 500 nursing colleges and training centres in India, several are located in the state of Maharashtra. These reputed nursing colleges in Maharashtra provide theoretical as well as practical education in the field. Apart from the two major cities of the state like Mumbai and Pune which are known for their quality education, there are institutes that provide training in nursing in the districts of Amravati, Sangli, Ahmednagar, Solapur, Akola, Wardha, Nagpur and Chandrapur.

The Amravati General Hospital, College of Nursing, Wanless Hospital, Dhanrajgiriji Hospital are just a few of the well known institutes of training in nursing in the state. These training centres are more often than not attached to hospitals. Students vying to become nurses receive practical instruction from their senior ward staff and their work is organized and administered by their tutors. Informative lectures are also taken place by specialists in the different branches of medicine for the benefit of the students.

Students of nursing are required to listen to lectures and instructions from specialists on a range of aspects in the field of medicine and nursing. Their training also requires them to take rounds of all the departments in hospitals attached to their colleges.

Every state in India, including Maharashtra has its own Nurses Council where the registration of a nurse takes place and it is requisite for nurses to get themselves registered with this organization on the successful completion of their training. Courses in Nursing:

There is a diploma available in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM). The duration of the course is three years.
The degree course in nursing is a Bachelor of Science with a major in the subject of nursing. In general, this course last for duration of four years.

Eligibility:

The eligibility criterion for a candidate is to pass an SSLC examination or any equivalent examination with the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Military Course:

The Military Nursing Services (MNS) are conducted by the armed forces hospitals in the state and the country. These courses are generally three year long and nurses are appointed on probation. Candidates selected for this prestigious service have to execute intelligence, maturity and a responsible bond with the military services for a period of four to five years. While being trained the candidates are given ration and accommodation with furniture free of cost, allowance for uniform and remuneration on a monthly basis.

Eligibility:

Students should have cleared a plus two examination with the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology or an equivalent examination with a minimum of 45% marks.
All students should be without medical disorders and not be under 17 or over 24 years of age.
Female students should be unmarried. Entry is also permitted to those women who are lawfully separated from their spouses or have been widowed. The final admission will be made on the basis of a written examination with questions based on the English language, Biology and general intelligence, which will be succeeded by a personal interview.Following is a region -wise list of all the important Nursing Colleges, functional in Maharashtra
