NAGPUR:-62% voters have received ID card

At the time of the Lok Sabha elections in April this year, the district collectorate had full information of about less than half of the
total number of voters in the entire district. However, that has changed, especially in the one-and-half-months since district collector Pravin Darade kick-started voter registration proceedings on June 1.

Within these three fortnights, the election department has come into possession full details, including photographs, of nearly 73% of the total 32.38 lakh voters in the district. Of these 32 lakh voters, nearly 62% have already received their voter identity cards, or the election photo identity cards (EPICs). As for the rest, the collectorate already has the photographs of another 10% of the voters, and only needs to put them on the EPICs and distribute them to the people.

Darade said that the target is to take this percentage to 90 for the entire district by the time this special voter registration initiative is completed. The help of political parties has already been enlisted for it, and the penetration of EPICs has already reached 90% in the rural areas of Nagpur, he explained.

"On Wednesday, we published the current electoral rolls, and gave a hard copy as well as the soft copy, in the form of a compact disc, to all the representatives of the political parties in the district. We have also started the initiative as part of which officials will go from house to house to photograph electors with a digital camera," he added.

Meanwhile, for an entire fortnight beginning from Tuesday, political parties as well as individuals can register objections regarding the electoral list of the district. Then again, on July 25 and 26, the booth level officers will be present at all the polling stations in the district to accept the applications and objections of people.
